Pay special attention to the kids’
room.
Have your children pack up all of their toys, stuffed animals and so
on. Let them keep one or two that they can’t do without. Make it a
game; give the kids boxes and tape. Let them see how much they can
pack for their new home. Take down all the “artwork” they have
pinned on the walls. Clean of all blackboards or wall boards. If you
have the child’s name on the door or walls of the room, get rid of
it right away as you don’t want young “Bobby” saying to his mother
“But I don’t want to live in April’s room”. Put some bright colorful
throw pillows on the beds.
Go through their closets and remove all the things that they have
outgrown or don’t wear any more. Set them aside. If it’s summer,
pack up their winter clothes and send them to storage.
You are going to do the same thing in your room. The idea is to make
your closets look bigger. After you have cleared them out as much as
possible, leave a few empty hangers there to show you have extra
room. If you don’t have a light in your closet, pick up one of those
inexpensive, battery operated, stick up ones from your hardware
store
Perception of closet size can make or break the sale.
Pick up all the stuff on your nightstands and dressers. Either pack
it now, or if you use it frequently, put the stuff in the drawers.
Just get it out of sight.
Vacuum and/or clean and polish all floors. Use one of those “Carpet
Fresh” type powders with an odor neutralizing formula or sprinkle
some baking soda on the carpets just before you vacuum.
Just don’t use anything with a really strong perfume.
Dust and polish all the furniture. I know, you are taking it with
you but it should shine while it’s still in your house. |
